The Windows Critical Update Alerter is a free product from Microsoft that
will notify you when new security fixes are available for your system
and help you download and install them. On the Microsoft
page, click on Product Updates and select Windows Critical
Updates.

If you choose not to install the Windows Critical Update Alerter, you
should visit the Windows
Update site to stay informed of current security fixes for Windows
operating systems and applications.
Download
the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) provides an easy and efficient
way to identify common security misconfigurations on your Windows-based
system. MBSA will scan your operating system and other installed components
for common system misconfigurations and check for missing security updates.
