Disabling Unnecessary Services

To disable IIS and other unnecessary services in Windows 2000:

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of the desktop.
  2. Click Settings, then click Control Panel.
  3. In the Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools.
  4. Double-click Services.
  5. Scroll down and double-click Internet Connection Sharing Properties.
  6. Change Startup Type to Disabled.
  7. Click Apply, then click OK.
  8. Also disable the following services (if they are present):

    • FTP Publishing Service
    • IIS Admin Service
    • Indexing Service
    • Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP)
