Disabling the Guest Account
You should disable any guest accounts on your system as they can provide
information to hackers and increase your security risk.
Windows Vista
To disable the guest account in Windows Vista:
- Click the Start button in the lower left corner of the desktop.
- Click Control Panel.
- Click User Accounts.
- Click Add or Remove User Accounts.
- You should see a line under the guest account which states, “Guest account is off”
If it is not, then:
- Click Guest.
- Click Turn off the guest account.
Windows XP
To disable the guest account in Windows XP:
- Click the Start button in the lower left corner of the desktop.
- Click Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Click User Accounts.
- In the User Accounts window, click Guest.
- Click Turn off the guest account.
Windows 2000
To disable the guest account in Windows 2000:
- Click the Start button in the lower left corner of the desktop.
- Click Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Click Users and Passwords.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- In the Advanced User Management dialog, click Advanced.
- In the Local Users and Groups dialog, click the Users
folder.
- Right-click the Guest account and select Properties.
- Select the Account is Disabled check box.
- Click Apply.
Windows NT
To disable the guest account in Windows NT:
- Click the Start button in the lower left corner of the desktop.
- Click Programs, then Administrative Tools (Common),
then User Management.
- In the User Management window, select the Guest Account.
- On the User menu, click Properties.
- In the Properties dialog. select the Account Disabled
check box, then click OK.
- Restart the computer.
